Obituary of Donald W. Appleton

Donald W. Appleton, 89, of Syracuse, died at his home on Saturday, February 13, 2016. Mr. Appleton served in the US Navy during World War Two II. He retired in 1982, after 34 years of service, as the Postmaster from the Onondaga Hill Post Office - 13215. After retiring from the USPS, he worked as a bank courier with AMSA and volunteered to prepare tax returns for senior citizens. As an active member of St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church, Don served on the Stewardship and Finance Committees, taught Sunday School, participated in Adult Education Classes, and volunteered in the Food Pantry. He received the 2014 Distinguished Disciple Annual Award from Lutheran Campus Ministry. He also volunteered for Meals on Wheels and the VA Hospital. He was pre-deceased by his wife Jane, who died in 2003 and a son, Thomas, who died in 1963. His family includes his sons: Ronald (Paulette) of NJ, David M. (Suzanne) of Utica; daughters: Joan Appleton Costanza (Frank) of VA, Nancy Appleton of FL; a brother Edgar (Barbara) of Cicero; grandchildren: Andy, Amy, Mike (Stephanie), Bob, Tommy, Melanie and Sarah; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and a close friend, Jane Wood. Funeral services are Tuesday 11AM in St. Stephen Lutheran Church with burial to follow in Woodlawn Cemetery. Calling hours are Monday 4-7:30PM at Frasier-Shepardson FH.
