Obituary of Elizabeth M. Runkle

Elizabeth M. Runkle, 92, of Syracuse, died at Crouse Memorial Hospital on June 10th. Miss Runkle was a resident of Elderwood at Liverpool. She was born in Gloversville, NY and her parents were Lois and Ervin Runkle. Miss Runkle entered the Navy at the beginning of WWII where she began her nursing training. Upon completion of her service, she attended the Teacher's College of Columbia University Nursing Program and then Case Western Reserve University's School of Nursing. Over the course of her career, Miss Runkle worked for the VA Medical Center, University Hospital, and Van Duyn Home and Hospital. She also taught in the School of Nursing at Syracuse University. After retiring from nursing, she volunteered for many years at Hospice of CNY and at University United Methodist Church's food pantry. Miss Runkle was predeceased by her parents and by her dear friend Johanna N. MacDonald. She is survived by cousins Arlene Copeland, Carol Beth Castro, Kristin Kniskern, and by her "adopted" family Roger L. MacDonald, Thomas (Terry) MacDonald, David (Vicki) MacDonald, Susan (Anthony) Parrillo and the MacDonald grandchildren. The family wishes to thank the staff of Elderwood for their care and compassion. A memorial service will be held at the Interfaith Chapel at SUNY Upstate Medical University on Tuesday, June 23rd at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of CNY or to a charity of choice.
