Obituary of Peter K. Kavanagh

Peter K. Kavanagh, 68, of Syracuse, died on Thursday at University Hospital. He was a graduate of Lemoyne College, Fordham University and SUNY Oswego. Mr. Kavanagh worked as a teacher, principal and district administrator for the Syracuse City School District from 1971-2000. The highlight of his career was his 12 years as principal of Henninger High School (1982-1993). He was also active with Eastwood TNT and the Syracuse City Democratic Party. In 2003, he was named "Syracuse Democrat of the Year". He was a member of the Heritage Foundation, the "North Wilmurt Irregulars", and a longtime donor to the Red Cloud Indian School. He was predeceased by his wife Peggy in 2006 and a brother Kevin. His family includes his sons: Brian D. (Mary) Kavanagh of East Syracuse, Peter "PJ" (Elizabeth) Kavanagh of North Canton, OH, Jonathan A. (Genevieve) Kavanagh of East Syracuse; daughter Rachel E. (Scott) Baldwin of Dubai, UAE; brothers: Richard and Brian Kavanagh; sister Eileen Kavanagh; grandchildren Jack, Sarah, Michael, Sean Kate, Aidan, Sophia, Megan, Ryan and Evan; and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, September 17th in Blessed Sacrament Church, 3127 James Street, Syracuse. A mass of the resurrection will be held on Thursday at 10:30am in the Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a scholarship fund in honor of Peter Kavanagh, c/o Robert DiFlorio, Henninger High School, 600 Robinson Street, Syracuse 13206.
