Sorry to hear of his passing. He was a great principal. I thought he was so cool because he gave me advance permission to let me make a joke about him (at my Dad's suggestion) during my speech when I was running for student council. The line was something like..."I won't sit around and watch Mr. Kavanaugh's hair grow." That got a good laugh from the crowd and I won! I'm sure it was because he was so cool about letting me poke fun. Great man.

"A person that departs from this earth never truly leaves, for they are still alive in our hearts and minds, through us, they live on." -Anonymous
I remember the first time I attempted to skip class to hang out near the cafeteria (to sit on the dunk your junk trash can). In my efforts to not get caught by Kav, I did. He politely told me which class I should be in and the direction it was in. His told me that college prep students do not have time to skip, they have to study. That very same advice helped me through both of my degree programs AND serves as a motto to my current students.
Please accept my condolences, Mr. Kav will NOT be forgotten.

I'm so sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Kavanagh. I know he and my Dad shared many fond memories of their time at Henninger, a school & community they both loved. I fondly remember Mr. Kavanagh's speech at my Dad's retirement party so many years ago. It was given with his trademark eloquence and humor that I always admired.. They were dedicated, compassionate educators who put students first. My prayers to the Kavanagh family.

Brian, PJ, and the rest of the Kavanagh family, I send my deepest condolences. Your father touched the lives of his students. As most have already stated, he was stern but fair. He also had a great sense of humor and a unique ability to diffuse a situation. As a freshman at Henninger, two female seniors were fighting and the teacher sent me to look for your father, when I told him about the fight, his response was "who's winning". He came down and de-escalated the situation in about 3 seconds. He seemed to know everyone and called students by name. He was always present and encouraged many students. He truly cared about his students and wanted them to succeed. He left this world too soon but he did make a huge impact on many during his time here.

He always was there with the quick wit and the the ever present display of his golf game. I would always ask him " peter how come you are in the woods behind every green" and he would say. "power". He was a great man. I send my love and prayers to the family. Gob Bless

Deeply sadden to see such a great man has passed. I never had the 'privilege' to be called to the principal's office but I got to interact with Mr. Kavanagh in the classroom. I always remember him coming into the classrooms and just sitting on the side of a desk in the back of the room to listen and join in with the teacher and students. He always had great stories or wisdom or thoughts. My daughter will attend Henninger next year and I told her that she will never get to experience the greatness of that school like I did because of Mr. Kav. He will be truly missed.
My thoughts and prayers to all of his family, friends, and those he impacted throughout the years.

Peter was a delightful gentleman...a square shooter who was consistently fair, honest and realistic. He could be counted upon to tell it as it was and to greet every situation with intelligence. He seldom stopped smiling and loved his work especially when students were involved. He was a good man...a great man!

Mr. Kavanagh, "Kav", was a truly special person! He was a mentor, a teacher, a friend. Even when I was an adult, and he was still at HHS, I returned to visit him. During that time, we discussed education, and how things had changed since I'd graduated. He was kind-hearted, but tough when necessary. My heart is heavy that I cannot be there to honor him in person however, from Jacksonville, FL, we send our condolences and deepest regards to his friends and family. Thank you for sharing this special man with all of the Henninger family! ℅ of 83

Prayers and thoughts are with Mr. Kavanagh's family for their loss of a loved one, and with Syracuse for the loss of a role model and leader, and with the entire Henninger Family of past staff and alumni for they have lost a great influence. And if the seniors still throw eggs at freshman on the first day of school, even if your principal doesn't catch you, know that Mr. K is looking down on you.

I spent most of my 4 years at Henninger hiding from him because he cared enough to look. When I managed to escape him, he was wise enough to send someone else. He was Omni present and an educator like no other. Forever a black knight, I called him the "Kavanator" for these reasons. If you were lucky enough to be under his care you knew he had something special. He inspired some of the teachers in that very school today. The world is a better place because of him. My deepest sympathies to his family. Class of 1989. God bless.

The emperor of the greatest high school ever!
Attending Henninger was the best 4 years of my life and Mr. Kavanaugh made that school. He ran a tight ship for a city school and he had respect. When you are respected things get done! Eternally grateful for the job he did and the person he was, past students and teachers very fortunate to have him as our leader.
I noticed we share the same birthday - honored.
