Obituary of James Michael Bloss

James Michael Bloss, 81, of Syracuse died on April 29, 2014, surrounded by his loving family, in Rochester. Mr. Bloss was born and raised in Syracuse and was a 1950 graduate of Most Holy Rosary High School. After a short period working, he enlisted in the US Navy where he served as an Electronics Technician. After returning from military service, Jim continued his career at Carrier Corporation. He retired after 37 years of service as a draftsman-designer. He worked for several more years as a contract draftsman and also worked as an Usher at the Carrier Dome for 10 years.
A devout Catholic, Mr. Bloss has been a communicant at Blessed Sacrament Church for over 53 years. During this time he served in many roles including as Usher, Altar Server, and a member of the Holy Name Society. He was also very active in scouting having been a leader in both Cub Scout Pack 223 and Boy Scout Troop 233, both sponsored by the parish. Mr. Bloss was a dedicated volunteer at Bishop Grimes High School. Most prominent was his involvement with the Sports Booster organization of which he was a co-founder and Past President. Jim was an avid fan of Syracuse University Athletics. 'Pop' Bloss was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend who was most supportive of everyone in his life.
Mr. Bloss is predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Claire (Brady) Bloss, as well as his parents James and Helen Bloss; his sisters Jeanette O'Brien and Esther Bloss. He is survived by his children Michael (Patricia) of Clifton Park, NY; John (Lisa Sardinia) of Portland, OR; Barbara Hulbert (Joseph) of Rochester, NY; Peter (Ann) of Marlton, NJ and Thomas (Nancy) of Ithaca, NY. Jim is also survived by his grandchildren Mariclare, Peter (Mary), and Erin Hulbert; Kathleen, Allison (Todd), and Kevin Bloss; James, Joseph, and Nicholas Bloss, and Jennifer (Joshua) Jackson; and great grandchildren Daniel, Hayley, and Grace Jackson. Jim is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and friends.
The Bloss Family would like to acknowledge the doctors and staff at the Wilmot Cancer Center at the University of Rochester Medical Center, and Lifetime Care, for their compassion and care.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday May 3, 2014 at 9:00 at Blessed Sacrament Church with burial to follow in the Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Calling hours will be Friday from 4 to 7 PM at the Goddard-Crandall-Shepardson Funeral Home, 3111 James Street.
