My mother and Charlie’s mother were sisters and we were the same age. He rarely would visit me in the country, as he would be so bored there, but I spent a great amount of time at his and my Grandma Taylor’s home, a two family house on S. Salina St. in Syracuse. He was a prankster, a freckle-faced, carrot-topped boy with an awesome sense of humor. He and his brother Dave and I spent many hours playing in the “wilds” of Balantyne Ave. - mostly woods back then.
While he loved baseball all his life, one of the things I remember most when we were kids is his practicing basketball for hours every day behind his house. Day after day. I never talked to him about his dreams but would bet they included the pros and I don’t know if it was a matter of talent or being vertically challenged that was the end of that; it certainly wasn’t for the lack of practice.
I mostly just saw him at family gatherings when we got older and he was a spitting image for Santa Claus. He’d be mostly quiet; then would get this twinkle in his eye, and a story would come out and his belly would shake when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly. For example: at Thanksgiving just a couple of years ago:
(Necessary background; my family had a funeral home in Homer, NY.)
Once, when we were kids, Charlie and I had a race from the kitchen at the funeral home to the downstairs side porch for a family picnic. I was carrying the potato salad and went right, outside the front door and around. He was carrying the hot dogs and (supposedly) went left, outside the back door and around. I don't remember who won. At Thanksgiving dinner some 50 plus years later, Charlie admitted that he had cut through the embalming room as a shortcut, and some of the hot dogs had SLID OFF THE PLATE. He didn't know what to do, so just put them back on the plate and proceeded out to the porch. He said he had hamburgs at that picnic.
Here's to slam dunks and triple plays in heaven, dear Charlie.

Our condolences to the family. Mr. Eddy brought kindness and humor to his excellent teaching presence at Liverpool Middle School. My three children were fortunate to learn from him and to have him as an advocate and mentor.

Dear Dave and family, I am shocked and saddened to read about Chuck. I lost touch ( and wish i hadn't) after high school. I always thought of him as a good friend and always had a good time with him. A truly good guy and good sense of humor. We went through primary and high school together. I also remember playing ball with him and working at Carrol's. I often wondered what he was doing with his life but always knew whatever path he chose he would do it well. I am happy to see a few former students already chimed in attesting to his teaching abilities.
Sending along my thoughts and prayers.
With sympathy,
Ed
