Dorothy L. Schafer, 101, a long-time resident of the Eastwood neighborhood in Syracuse NY, died peacefully on Saturday, May 25, 2024. Dorothy was born on August 14, 1922, in Buffalo, NY, to George and Gertrude (Klapp) Fett. She graduated from Eastwood High School and earned an AA degree from Syracuse University. Dorothy worked in the library at Henninger High School; after retiring from the Syracuse City School District, Dorothy remained active in the community and enjoyed traveling and gathering with friends at the PEACE Senior Center on Midler Ave. Throughout her life, she actively supported her community’s scouting groups, the 76’ers Drum and Bugle Corps, the Eastwood Neighborhood Watch organization and the Beaver Lake Nature Center. Dorothy was a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church and a member of the Eastwood American Legion Auxiliary. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Edward and sister, Arline.
She is survived by her children Dorothy A. Schafer (Craig Spaulding), David E. Schafer, (Jeanne Pierce) and Paul J. Schafer (Laura), grandchildren Katie and Jonathan Schafer, 5 step-grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren, her sister, Joanne Cameron (Martin) and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, June 6, 2024, from 4-7 pm at Goddard-Crandall-Shepardson Funeral Home, 3111 James Street. A funeral Mass will be held on Friday, June 7, 2024, at 11:30 am in Blessed Sacrament Church. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Dorothy’s memory can be provided to the Beaver Lake Nature Center.
