Obituary of Elaine R. Smith

Elaine R. Smith, 99, of Syracuse, died on Sunday, June 6 at her home. She was a WWII Veteran serving in the US Coast Guard and was a life long member of the American Legion Post 1276. Elaine enjoyed bowling, golfing, going to the casino, and the occasional Manhattan cocktail and cigarette on her porch with friends and family. She worked as a payroll supervisor at the VA Medical Center where she retired after 40 dedicated years. She was predeceased by her parents John C. Smith Sr. and Margaret DeMarco Smith; her sisters Georgianna Smith, Vivian Smith McDonald; and sister-in-law Josephine Smith. Elaine is survived by her brother John C. Smith Jr.; nieces and nephews: John Cayll Smith III, Brent E. (Mary Jo) McDonald, Jeffrey C. (Mary) Smith, Jay C. Smith Sr. and Joanne (Lance) Reed; several great nieces, great nephews, and several great-great nieces and nephews. The family would like to express their gratitude to Elaine’s dedicated friends and aides who helped fulfill her wishes of spending her final years at home. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 10:30am in Blessed Sacrament Church . Burial will follow in Assumption Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Thursday from 4-7pm at the Goddard-Crandall-Shepardson Funeral Home, 3111 James Street. Contributions may be made to the Golisano Children’s Hospital.
