Obituary of Joseph H. Fischer

Joseph H. Fischer, 91, from Liverpool, NY, died Thursday, July 9, 2020. Born in Philadelphia, PA, he resided in Liverpool for the past 55 years. He retired in 1990 after working for New York Telephone Company (Verizon). He served in the U.S. Navy from 1946-1948 and again in 1951-1952 in the Korean War aboard the aircraft carrier, U.S.S. Boxer. Joe was a graduate of Alfred University, where he majored in Economics. He was an active member of the YMCA, a former member of the Y’s Board of Directors, and active in many Y activities as a volunteer, including the Mountain Goat road race to which he was recently recognized with his name engraved on the Onondaga Park Mountain Goat monument. He was an avid reader, long-distance runner, cyclist and cross-country skier. He was also a member of the Syracuse Track Club, Onondaga Cycling Club, and the Telephone Pioneers of America. After retiring, Joe volunteered for the American Red Cross for over twenty years; 15 years in disaster services and subsequently as a Red Cross representative at the V.A. Medical Center in Syracuse. Joe loved to travel with his wife, Lillian, and over the years they traveled extensively throughout the United States and Canada, Europe and Asia. He is survived by his wife, Lillian (Falcone) Fischer of 66 years; two sons, Curt of Colorado and Dwight (Alison) of Syracuse; a daughter, Kim (Sami) of South Dakota, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. An outdoor gathering will be held to celebrate Joe’s life – meet at 9am Friday, July 17 at the Mountain Goat Memorial Statue in Onondaga Park, Syracuse.
