Louis Nicholas Tartaro , 93 passed quietly on February 20th with his family at his side. Louis was born August 25th, 1919 in Syracuse N.Y. He served 4 years in the U.S. Army and was stationed in England where he met and married his beautiful English wife, Irene Elliott in 1945. They later returned to Syracuse where Louis worked for the Veterans Administration and attended Lemoyne college where he earned a degree in Business. Louis was a life-long communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church. He was very active in Pop Warner football and was known as the "Silver Dollar Referee" because he started each game with a silver dollar toss, which the boy that won the toss got to keep. He was a very avid and accomplished golfer. He made a total of 4 holes in one in his career at the courses at Green Lakes, Tecumseh and Liverpool. He also belonged to several leagues and played as often as he could find the time. Lou retired from the City of Syracuse in 1987, where he worked as a Building Codes Inspector for many years. Louis was 1 of 9 children and is survived by siblings Lucy Van Dyke, Mary (Dick) Speach, and Donald (Jean) Tartaro. Lou and Irene have several nieces and nephews as well as great-nieces and great-nephews. Lou is survived by his wife Irene and 5 children: Anne Kassel of Chittenango, Michael Tartaro of Santa Cruz, California, Peter Tartaro of Salt Lake City, Utah, Teresa Kelsey (Tom Desnoyers) of Manlius and Mary Tartaro (Alan Obeirne) of Ben Lomond, California. They have 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren that will miss him very much. Lou lived a long and happy life and will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all who knew him. Funeral services are Monday at 10am at the Goddard-Crandall-Shepardson Funeral Home and at 10:30 in Blessed Sacrament Church. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Calling hours are Sunday from 2-5pm at the funeral home, 3111 James Street. Contribution can be made to Sunnyside Nursing Home Activities Fund in appreciation for their exceptional care.
