Obituary of Rae C. DeWolf

Rae C. DeWolf, 85, of North Syracuse, passed peacefully at home after a 2-year battle with late onset ALS. She was born in Syracuse and grew up in Eastwood, graduating from Eastwood High in 1952. She worked for John Hancock Insurance, the American Baptist Church Office and as an executive secretary at General Electric. Rae also worked various jobs in the North Syracuse school district, including handicap bus aide and teaching assistant at Bear Road School and Elmcrest Children’s Center. Rae was a highly active member of Eastwood Baptist Church, taught Sunday school, was in the church choir and was camp counselor at both Camp Adelphi and Pathfinder. She also served on the Board of Directors of the Greater East Syracuse Day Care Center. She enjoyed playing Bridge and belonged to many bridge clubs over the years and spending summers at camp on DeRuyter Lake and Cleveland Lake Club in the Adirondacks. She also enjoyed her flower gardens and was an avid teddy bear collector, belonging to a local Teddy Bear club that donated bears to Law Enforcement to give children in time of need. Rae was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Harold J. DeWolf; her parents Raymond and Edna Slentz; brother Lawrence Slentz and sister Edna Hart. She is survived by sons: Mark (Cathy) DeWolf of North Syracuse and Raymond of DeRuyter; grandchildren Tanner (Megan) DeWolf, Stephanie DeWolf Spring and great grandchildren Coleman, Sawyer, Cheyenne and Carson; brother in law Charles (Lorraine) DeWolf; sister in law Alyce DeWolf; many nieces and nephews and special cousin and best friend Marilyn Macco. The family would like to thank the therapist and nurses from Kindred at Home, the ALS Clinic at Upstate University Hospital and especially Hospice of Central New York for the care and compassion at the end. A special thank you to her Home Aid Bertha Gilmore and her angel on earth, Gayle Cook Vinette for caring for Rae and her husband Hal for many years. A memorial service will be held at Eastwood Baptist Church when circumstances allow. Contributions can be made to Eastwood Baptist Church.
