Obituary of Wilbur L. Hess

Wilbur L. Hess, 90, of Syracuse, died on Tuesday morning at his home peacefully surrounded by his family. He was a graduate of North High School and received his journalism degree in 1949 from Syracuse University. During World War Two, Mr. Hess served in the Signal Corps in the US Army. He was the retired Chief of Fire for the City of Syracuse and served the Fire Department for 38 years until retirement in 1987. He was the last surviving founding member of the Syracuse Fire Department Rescue Company. He was a member of the Police/Fire Retirement Association, a member and past president of Firefighters Union #280, a member of the Pastimes and a communicant of the Assumption Church. He was pre-deceased by his wife Kathryn Lorraine Hess and brother Arthur Hess. He is survived by his daughter: Kathryn (George) Barzee of Pawleys Island, SC; sons: William L. (Irene) of Cicero, Wayne E. (Martha) of Syracuse, Timothy J. (Stephany) of Syracuse, Jeffery D. (Robin) of Minoa; sister: Rosemary Doyle of White Plains, NY; 11 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services are Friday at 10am in Assumption Church. Burial will be in Assumption Cemetery. Calling hours are Thursday from 3-7pm at the Frasier-Shepardson Funeral Home, 1217 N. Salina Street. In memory of his wife Lorraine, memorial donations may be made the Alzheimer's Association.
