Obituary of Vivian Alicia Smith McDonald
Vivian Alicia Smith McDonald passed away peacefully on July 5th, 2018 in Clearwater Beach, FL in her centennial year. She was the beloved wife of the late Canadian born, D. Earl (Mac) McDonald. Vivian is survived by her son, Brent E. McDonald of Clearwater Beach , FL ( Mary Jo). She was the fun loving and cherished grandmother (MiMi) to her twin grandchildren, 14 year old, Alicia and Alexander. Also surviving are her stepson, Donald E. McDonald Jr. , (The late Biruta Briedis McDonald); grandsons, Mark and Craig, several great, and great-great-grandchildren of Ipswich, MA.; her step-daughter- in-law, Vivian Overhiser McDonald, (The late Bruce V. McDonald), grandson Edward (Roxanne), and great-granddaughter Ashley, of Rochester N.Y.
Vivian is also survived by her sister, Elaine R. Smith and her brother, John C. Smith (The late Josephine Catalfino) and their children, Cayll, Jeff, Jay, and Joanne of Syracuse, N.Y., and predeceased by her sister, Georgianna G. Smith. Also, lovingly remembered by her many nieces, nephews, and their families, and by all those in the Smith and McDonald extended families.
Vivian was born in Schenectady N.Y. to the late John and Immaculata, Margaret, (DeMarco) Smith in 1918. Her father, a Syracuse native and prominent Attorney, served as Deputy Attorney General of New York State in the 1930's.
Vivian retired from J.C Smith Inc., of which she was part of the founding members. She also served as the financial controller of Mid-State Contractors Equipment Co. in the 1940's and 50's.
Vivian graduated from Eastwood High School in 1936, and attended Syracuse University. She was a member of Beta Chi Sorority ,and a 1930's volunteer of the Big Sister's Association. Her Florida activities, included the 440 West Red Hat Society, Silver Sneakers Beach Walkers, 440 West Bridge Club. She was a Bridge enthusiast, that attended many Syracuse Corinthian Club parties with her lifelong friend, the late Evelyn (Venditti) Schall. Also, an afternoon bowler at the former Eastwood Bowling Center. Vivian was a communicant at Blessed Sacrament Church, and St. Brendan's Catholic Church in Clearwater Beach, Florida. The past 25 years were filled with fun and travel with her companion of many years, the late Bud Bierman.
The family will receive friends on Friday, August 10, 2018 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at Goddard-Crandall- Shepardson, Funeral Home, 3111 James Street, Syracuse, N.Y., and also on Saturday, August 11th, 2018 from 9:00-10:00 a.m. at the funeral home with a Funeral Mass to be offered at 10:30 a.m. at the Blessed Sacrament church with interment services following at Woodlawn Cemetery.
