Obituary of Monica Segrue Hoey

Please share a memory of Monica to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Monica Segrue Hoey of Dewitt, NY, passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 24, 2018 at Riverledge in Ogdensburg, NY.  Though she did not like to tell her age, she was 91 years old.
Monica Dolores Segrue was born 22 April 1926 to Dennis and Agnes Ryan Segrue.  She grew up on Tipperary Hill, graduating from St. Patrick’s School at age 17.   She went to work at the IRS, a decision she said she regretted immediately.  She attended Syracuse University as a biochemistry major at a time when women were not always welcomed in those programs.  She persevered, working full-time while going to school, as a laboratory technician at the University Hospital (now Upstate Medical Center).  She developed friendship bonds with other women in science at Syracuse University, friendships that carried throughout all of their lives.  She had great times with her friends skiing in the Adirondacks, seeing Broadway shows and shopping for the latest fashions in New York City, and staying closer to home going out to Onondaga Lake to swim, and playing tennis.
Before her marriage, she worked at Bristol Laboratory in East Syracuse as a bench chemist, paving the way for women chemists that followed.  She met her husband, Michael P. Hoey (1921-2007) on a blind date, and in October 1953 they were married in St. Patrick’s Church. With three kids in tow, Monica kept the house while volunteering at Holy Cross School for cafeteria duty and in the library, and at Bishop Grimes High School in the audio-video department.  She was a member of the Holy Cross Church Altar & Rosary Society.  Once the kids were grown and moved on, she and her husband Mike enjoyed their empty nest years with European vacations and visiting their children and grandchildren.  Her secret to longevity, she said, was to find a chronic condition you could live with, and, of course, persistence and staying active.
Monica Segrue Hoey is predeceased by her husband Mike, two sisters, Margaret Segrue and Mary Patricia Hughes, and two brothers, Reverend Joseph D. Segrue, and John Segrue.  She is survived by her brother Jeremiah Segrue of Penfield, NY, daughter Agnes Doty (husband Paul, grandchildren Anna Jarvis and Margaret Doty), her son Michael (wife Kim, grandchildren Michael and Meghan), and daughter Anne Krieg (husband Rob, grandchildren Mae, Theresa and Gabriel), and several nieces and nephews.   She is also survived by the many families in Tipperary Hill that were first, second and third cousins (once and twice removed) that she could name easily just by driving past their homesteads.
A wake is scheduled for Monday, January 29 from 4-7 PM at Goddard-Crandall-Shepardson Funeral Home, 3111 James Street, Syracuse.  The funeral Mass will be on Tuesday, January 30 at 10:00 AM at Holy Cross Church in Dewitt, followed by the burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, donations are requested for the Altar Rosary Society at Holy Cross Church or the Syracuse University Women’s Empowerment Project (https://www.suwomensempowerment.com/)
