Siegfried was my absolutely favorite professor and favorite person while at Syracuse University School of Architecture (Graduate of 1984). I took his welding course at the "Bauhaus" which turned out to be a life changing experience for me. Syracuse was a tough place for architecture at the time. There was a real sink or swim attitude there at the time. Siegfried was one of the few encouraging and supportive people there. He was also a true educator in that he truly seemed to want us to understand the nature of our endeavor and how to succeed at it. So wonderful was my time at the "Bauhaus", that I signed up for another semester of his welding course, much to the chagrin of the University. I didn't care, I loved being there. Siegfried started our welding education by making us read "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance", a book I would highly recommend. He taught us about welding, but I think welding was a metaphor for play. Siegfried was insightful, to the point, but always with a positive spin. His mannerism, his tone, his wit, his enthusiasm for life, are all things I will always remember, and miss for the rest of my life. For those of you who might have known me, I am the skeleton chair man, a chair I aptly named Siegfried. Love to you forever Siegfried, and to your beautiful wife Renate, and wonderful daughter Barbara.

I first met Siegfried as a student in his Basic Design class in the Architecture School. I could draw pretty well, and guess that got his attention. Later I got an assistantship to run the "Bauhaus", an old carriage house near Marshall Street Siegfried had somehow reined in for use as as shop for Architecture School students. I lived at the Bauhaus, and Siegfried, along with other Architecture students used to stop in for a beer. There was always good conversation when Siegfried was around. I respected him for his high principals and ability to see through the surface of things and get to the core of stuff. We got along well. I also remember being impressed with his temper, which didn't show often, but when it did, get out of the way. One day he came into Slocum in a rage. I think he'd just been denied tenure, or shown disrespect by Syracuse. He was like a human typhoon, throwing things and yelling. Then one time I had a legal problem I can't remember the details of, and he made the effort to consult with Renate, who I believe worked in a law firm, and together they provided me with the advice I needed. When the student strikes hit the campus, and students marched instead of go to class, Siegfried drew us in his journal marching in Nazi helmets. He showed me the drawing and I can still see it today - I've never forgotten that. A warning about climbing on the bandwagon, any bandwagon. His experiences in the war in Germany weighed on him. He was a good man, and made an impression on me. I still think about him often.

Siegfried Snyder was one of my architecture professors in the early 70s at Syracuse University. He is the one I remember best. Though it's been many years, and I only had him for a basic design class, I have a few memories. They are vague, they are random but they remain. I remember speaking to him while he was whittling wood outside some sort of shed somewhere on campus. I remember him showing me a cartoon he thought I would like which had me in stitches within moments. There was the time a huge dog wandered into the design studio on the top floor of our building and somewhat startled him. Mostly I remember him as a caring teaching whom I didn't appreciate at the time as much as I should have. May the family be comforted at his loss.
