Obituary of William J. Fitzgibbons

William J. Fitzgibbons April 6, 2017 William J. Fitzgibbons, 85, of Syracuse passed away Thursday at home surrounded by his family. Born in Syracuse, Bill was the son of the late James and Ida Fitzgibbons. He was predeceased by his wife Catherine Fitzgibbons and sister Helen Dougherty. He graduated from Most Holy Rosary and served in the US Navy. He worked at Niagara Mohawk for 39 years where he met his wife, Catherine McKeever. Bill and Cathy were married for 54 years, their love was one of a kind and they were the perfect complement to one another. Bill was a member of the Pastime Athletic Club where he loved to play in the pitch league. He loved to vacation in Maine and he and Cathy spent winters in Florida. Bill was a volunteer with the American Red Cross and his church, Blessed Sacrament, as a Eucharistic Minister and helped in various activities. Bill was the one you could always depend on; for a smile, a trusted friend and for his loving and giving ways. His genuine and humble nature made everyone around him love him and leave a lasting impact on our lives. Bill is survived by his children: Mary Klee, Jim Fitzgibbons and Patti Fitzgibbons; his granddaughters who were the light of his life: Lauren Klee and Meghan Fitzgibbons, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. Our family would also like to thank By Your Side Companion care, in particular Jacquie Weaver and Alene Ganzy who have become family to all of us. The dignity, love and care you gave to Dad was a tremendous gift to us all. A funeral mass will be held on Tuesday at 10:30am in Blessed Sacrament Church with burial to follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Dewitt. Calling hours are Monday from 4-7pm at the Goddard-Crandall-Shepardson Funeral Home, 3111 James Street, Syracuse. The family asks that you please do not send flowers.
