Obituary of James J. Macheda

James J. Macheda February 10, 2017 James Macheda, 96, of Eastwood, passed away Friday, February 10, 2017, at the VA CLC (Comfort Living Center). James, a life-long Syracuse resident was the son of Carmela (Catrupi) and Dominic Macheda. James served in the CCC (Citizen Conservation Corp) as a teen and helped build Fair Haven State Park. He then joined the Army and fought in WWII in North Africa, France and Belgium where he participated in the Battle of the Bulge. Out of the Army he continued working for the Federal government first at the Small Business Administration as a Loan Administrator and later as a Disaster Relief insurance adjuster. Jim was an avid hunter and tinkerer and an exceptionally nice guy who will be missed for his incredible memory. He was predeceased by his son, Thomas, brothers Andrew and Benny and sisters Pauline, Helen, Mary and Antoinette. James is survived by his wife Phyllis, son Rick (Fran), daughters Diane and Valeeta, daughter-in-law Annitta, 3 grandchildren, 3 nieces and 2 nephews. The family wishes to extend its heartfelt thanks to all the doctors and nurses at the VA Hospital especially the CLC (Comfort Living Center). Everyone treated James with respect and gave him incredible care. Calling hours will be Tuesday from 4 – 7 PM at Goddard-Crandall-Shepardson Funeral Home, 3111 James Street.
