Dearest Freda, Eileen and family, this is a prayer for your beloved Patrick
O my God! O Thou forgiven of sins, bestower of gifts, dispeller of afflictions!
Verily I beseech Thee to forgive the sins of such as have abandoned the physical garment and have ascended to the spiritual world.
O my Lord! Purify them from trespasses, dispel their sorrows and change their darkness into light. Cause them to enter the garden of happiness, cleanse them with the most pure water and grant them to behold Thy splendor on the loftiest mount.
-Abdu'l-Baha
With all my love to you,
Lisa Jacques

I'm very sorry to hear about Mr. Heagerty. He was my 8th grade teacher (and possibly homeroom teacher too). He and my grandmother, Evelyn Barrett, used to teach together back in the late 60s or early 70s; I think when Wellwood was possibly the high school for Fayetteville?.
We both held Mr. Heagerty in high regard. I was an insecure, overweight middle schooler and I remember my grandmother always telling me that I should seek out Mr. Heagerty if I was ever nervous or afraid.
He was a great teacher and always had a good sense of humor (at least when we middle schoolers were not working his last nerve, as we were known to do).
I'm truly sorry for your loss.
Warm regards, Pete

Our condolences to Freda and family upon the loss of dear, sweet, Patrick. He was one of a kind for sure, and a joy to be around. Such an intelligent, kind, and senstive man, to say nothing of his extreme bravery, as noted by the many, many service awards he so richly deserved. He put his life on the line for his country, and then lived a life as an educator, and good, moral man. God bless you all, and you are in our prayers. We won't soon see another one like him.

I'm so sorry to hear of Pat's passing. He was my eighth grade history teacher in 1963 and quite a good one, at that. More recently, prior to my move to South Carolina, I frequented the "Duck Pub" on occasion where I had the pleasure of drinking a Guinness or two with my former history teacher. My thoughts and sincere condolences are with you all.

We were saddened to hear of the passing of Mr. Heagerty. He was our son's 8th grade social studies teacher at Wellwood and had a profound influence on him becoming a social studies teacher. Teachers like Mr Heagerty are a rare gift to their students and much appreciated by parents.
May you, his family, cherish your memories and take comfort in knowing that his legacy lives on. The Ryan Family

I remember 'Mr. Heagerty' as our history teacher who commanded our attention with style, knowledge, charm and wit. He loved the subject and asked a lot of us.
His entertaining personality was bestowed to his son, Patrick, who left us too soon.

My condolences to the Heagerty family on the loss of Patrick. I began my teaching career at Wellwood Middle School when Patrick was there. I totally enjoyed working with him. I loved his stories, his wit and wisdom. He was my favorite colleague at Wellwood. I can remember many a time tipping a few with Patrick and his best buddy Jim Brown on Fridays at What's Your Beef. I can recall many a lunch duty with Patrick giving "The Hook" to students who had to clean up after themselves. Another great memory was watching him perform on the stage of Wellwood in Pirates of Penzance. He was a natural on stage that everyone thoroughly enjoyed. I think there is an audio tape of the performance somewhere. May God Bless Patrick and his family. Rest in Peace my friend.

My deepest sympathies to the entire Heagerty family. I have such fond memories of visiting the Heagerty household with Mike during our early and later school years. Pat and Freda were always so warm and welcoming. And Pat's reccounting of the various civil war battles on our stop at Williamsburg, on the way to Nag's Head, brought the whole subject of history alive for me. For that I will be forever thankful. When one looks back at their life, certain people are etched in their memories. Pat is one of those individuals. May he rest in peace.

I extend my sympathy and that of Fayetteville-Manlius High School's French Club on the passing of a truly great man and a citizen of the world. Mr. Heagerty took the time to address French Club members on his experiences during the war and his time in France during peacetime as he was honored by the French government as a member of the Légion d'honneur. I will never forget his speech, delivered in full military regalia on one of the hottest days of the year! French Club members learned a great deal from this extraordinary man who led an extraordinary life. He is mourned on two continents today.

Mr Heagerty taught me U.S. history in the eighth grade, 1979. He an outstanding, memorable teacher and mentor. Mr. Heagerty invited me and other classmates to view his personal memorabilia from his war years, and we were privileged to see his astoundingly detailed and beautiful scale model creations of aircraft. I have with regularity thought about Mr Heagerty over the years, and deeply appreciate the way he shaped my early intellectual life. Mr Heagerty was a war hero. His obituary above certainly understates the incredible valor and courage Mr Heagerty displayed in combat under shockingly bad conditions. As I recall, Mr Heagerty was awarded his Silver Star, one of the highest decorations for valor in combat, for single handedly attacking and eliminating a Nazi machine gun nest, saving the lives of many of his infantry comrades. Many hundreds (thousands?) of Mr Heagerty's former pupils are grateful for his contribution to our country's freedom as well as to our education.

The best we can hope for in this life is to leave the world a better place than when we found it. Mr. Heagerty did that. We tested all of our teachers in Junior High. He always kept his cool. I am sure most of us just knew that he was a veteran, and not how much "action" he saw. He will be remembered and missed. Peace be with you all.

Sweepers! Man your brooms!!! How could I forget. I tell my kids that story to this day. Mr. Heagerty was always on lunch duty at Wellwood and was as strict as a sergeant on us. Five kids who had gotten in trouble were assigned to sweep the cafeteria-to their shame-when lunch was over. Mr. Heagerty would yell, "SWEEPERS" and the entire cafeteria would yell, "MAN YOUR BROOOOMS!!" It was pretty embarrassing if it was you doing the sweeping because then everyone knew you had gotten in trouble for something. Aside from that he was one of the most interesting and vivid teachers I've ever had. Rest easy Sgt Heagerty.

We will remember Patrick for so many things, but our last fond memory will be of him sitting proudly in his uniform in the blazing sun at the July 4th parade this year with Freda at his side. It was wonderful to see the joy on his face enjoying the parade and welcoming those who came to thank him for his service to our county. A finer man there isn't. The light on our house flag will shine in his honor. Thanks Patrick.
