Obituary of Elizabeth A. Zacharek

Elizabeth “Betty” (McVey) Zacharek, 82, of East Syracuse, died peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She had retired from General Heat Treating and formerly worked at Olivetti-Underwood Corporation, where she met her husband of 61 years, Edward Zacharek. She was a communicant of St. Matthew’s Church and formerly helped serve on the bereavement team. She was a loving mother of 5 children. She was pre-deceased by her parents Joseph and Edna McVey; infant son Gregory; and brothers: Jack, Don, Bob and Father Raymond “Ray” McVey. She is survived by her husband Edward; daughters: Linda (Joe) Zuber of Chittenango, Joan (Paul) Burdick of Baldwinsville, Mary Jo (Jim) Sawyer of Kirkville; sons: Ed (Robin) of Eastwood, John (Jennifer) of Clay; grandchildren: Andy, Rick, David Zuber; Sarah (Burdick) Conord, Ken Burdick; Dan, Laura Sawyer; Valerie Zacharek; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Betty was loved by many friends, and found unique ways to make friends and strangers feel special. Funeral services are Monday at 10:30 in the Goddard-Crandall-Shepardson Funeral Home and at 11am in St. Matthew’s Church with burial to follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Dewitt. Calling hours are 4-7pm on Sunday at the Funeral Home, 3111 James Street, Syracuse. Memorial contributions may be made to Unity Acres or to Hospice of CNY.
