Obituary of James Leo Salanger

James Leo Salanger, 86, of East Syracuse, died at home with his family on Saturday morning. He was a life resident of Syracuse and served in the US Navy. He was a graduate of Blessed Sacrament School and St. Vincent dePaul High School. Jim retired in 1989 as one of the co-owners of Salanger & Hayward Insurance agency. He played in the Eastwood Golf League for over 60 years, volunteered at the American Red Cross and the East Syracuse Meals on Wheels. He was a life long communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church and a BINGO volunteer. He was a member of the Elks Lodge #31 and the American Legion Post #1276. Jim served as the supervisor of the Fifth Ward in the City of Syracuse in 1948. He was pre-deceased by his 3 brothers: John, Charles and Frank. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Helen (Langhorst); a daughter: Maureen (Joe) Markert of East Syracuse; his sister: Joan (Chuck) Beeler of Dewitt; 2 sisters-in-law: Mary Alice Salanger and Anna Mae Salanger; 4 grandchildren: Anna, Maria, Eric, Laura Markert; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral mass will be Tuesday at 10:30 in the Blessed Sacrament Church with burial to follow in Woodlawn Cemetery. Calling hours are Monday from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at the Goddard-Crandall-Shepardson Funeral home, 3111 James Street. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of CNY or to the Blessed Sacrament School.
