William C. McCarthy, 82, of Baldwinsville, passed away on Sunday January 4th, 2015. Bill, as everyone called him, was born and grew up in Eastwood, NY. He graduated from Eastwood High School and attended Onondaga Community College. Bill was a U.S. Army veteran having served 2 years in Korea. He also served in the Army Reserves for several years after returning home. Bill made acareer at, and retired from, Niagara Mohawk Power Company, where he workedhimself up from meter-reader into management as a coal buyer. Bill also served on the board of the company's newly formed Power Federal Credit Union.
Bill liked to spend his weekends during the summer with family and friends at hiscamp on Oneida Lake, where he enjoyed boating, water-skiing, sailing, canoeing and swimming at Sylvan Beach. Bill was a bit of a car buff as well. Over the years he owned 2 different Corvettes which were his pride and joy. For a time he was a member of the local Corvette club. Bill was also an avid snow skier and was active with the Syracuse Ski Hawks ski club. He skied all the local mountains as well as many in Vermont and Colorado.
Bill was a huge fan and supporter of the arts. He enjoyed attending symphony concerts, art exhibits, park concerts, movies and the theater. He would travel to NYC several times a year to see Broadway shows and even acted in a few local theater productions. Bill also loved to travel. He and his sister, Arlene, literally traveled the world together. France, England, Italy, China, Russia, Egypt, Sweden, Germany, Mexico, Japan and Costa Rico were some of the places they traveled to, in addition to most of the US and Canada. They also "wintered" in Florida for several months each year.
Bill had a big heart for animals. His miniature poodles Mimi and Muffin were like his children and he always donated money to local animal shelters to help care for the strays. Bill was also generous to his family and friends. He was a kind, caring, outgoing, wonderful person who was liked and loved by everyone who knew him.
Bill was predeceased by his sister, Arlene Henson, in 2002. He is survived by his nephew Rhys Henson of Baldwinsville and 3 cousins: Patti Ely of Phoenix, NY; Carol Leo of Las Vegas; James Dugan of Cortland, NY.
