Obituary of Nancy Strathmann

Nancy (Van Volkenburg) Strathmann, 70, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday. She was born in Fort Plain, NY, the daughter of the late Helen and Harry Van Volkenburg. She received her B.S. and M.S. from SUNY Oswego, and started her teaching career at North Syracuse High School. After taking time off to raise her family, Nancy resumed her career in Liverpool at the elementary level and retired in 2001. Spending time with family and friends, being at camp, reading, and teaching brought her great joy. She was an inspiration to all who knew her. She will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Nancy is survived by her husband of 48 years, Gilbert; son Steven (Jan Schmidt) Strathmann; daughter Suzanne (Chip) Fairbanks; a very close friend who she thought of as a son, Bill (Heather) Cayea; and grandchildren Owen and Elliana Fairbanks.
A memorial service followed by an informal gathering will be held at the Liverpool United Methodist Church at 5pm Monday.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation or the American Cancer Society.
