Obituary of Sharon A. Smith

Please share a memory of Sharon to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Sharon Anne Smith, 67, of Chittenango, died on Saturday at St. Joseph's Hospital. She retired after more than 20 years as head custodian for the Oneida City Schools. She was a 23 year veteran of the US Naval Service and Reserves and retiring as a Chief Petty Officer. She was a member of the Sylvan Beach American Legion and was a former instructor with the Navy League and the Sea Cadet Corps. The last 9 years of Sharon's life was a special gift from Mother Marianne Cope and the prayers of many. A miraculous cure in 2005 gave Sharon a new life and allowed Mother Marianne to be elevated to sainthood in the Roman Catholic Church. She presented the relic of Mother Marianne to Pope Benedict at the Canonization in October, 2012. She volunteered at Francis House, a home for the terminally ill in Syracuse, cleaning and visiting the residents as a way to give something back. She was pre-deceased by her parents: Bernie and Mabel Smith, and sister: Norma Sochia. She leaves behind her family of friends including Patricia Pilon and a wonderful circle of people who touched her life and whom she touched. She is in your hearts and you know who you are. The funeral mass will be held on Thursday at 11 am at Saint Vincent dePaul Church. Internment will be private at a later date. Calling hours are Wednesday from 4-7pm in the church, 342 Vine Street, Syracuse 13203. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Francis House, 108 Michaels Avenue, Syracuse 13208 or The Museum of St. Marianne Cope, Maria Regina, 1118 Court St. Syracuse, NY 13208.
