A Treasured Gift
One gift, above all others,
God gives to us to treasure--
One that knows no time, no place;
One that gold can't measure--
The precious, poignant, tender gift
of Memory--for it keeps
Our dear ones ever in our hearts,
Though they have gone to sleep.
It brings back long remembered things--
A song, a word, a smile--
And the world's a better place because
We had them for a while!

Uncle Jay loved family and particularly loved visiting his older brother Arthur (my dad) down the cottage in Mattapoisett, Ma.. They would recall funny events of their childhood...like the time they went to the circus only to return home and recreate death defying acts like knife throwing. One day Grandma Doane caught Uncle Jay standing up against an outside wall with arms splayed while older brother Arthur threw knives at him as close as he could get without injury. Poor Grandma Doane! But this was old-fashion fun! Thank God my dad always had good aim!

I have fond memories of Uncle Jay driving his RV to our cottage at the Cape. He loved and appreciated being "waited on " and his Verona coffee- we had the same taste! I enjoyed hearing all stories he told of the old days. It's hard to believe time passes so quickly. I'm sorry to have not made the time to visit for a weekend. We all think there always will be time. I think of all the good times we had when Dad was alive. May he rest in peace with Aunt Margaret.
With Sympathy and Love,
Your Niece Lorna and Chelsea

My Grandpa Doane cared for and provided for his family. My best memories with Grandpa Doane were sitting at his kitchen table, watching sports and cracking open peanuts still in the shells together. He loved cigars, and to this day, when I smell a cigar, I always think of him. When I harvested peanuts with my community in Mozambique a few years ago, community members were confused as to how this "mulungo," or white person, knew how to open peanut shells so well. I credit this to Grandpa Doane and remembered him then. I will always hold memories of him in my heart and love him. I wish for his soul to rest in peace with Grandma Doane in heaven.
