Obituary of Elizabeth Rowe

Elizabeth S. Rowe, 92, died peacefully at Iroquois Nursing Home on June 23. Born in Sidney, New York on May 28, 1921 to Frank and Myrtle (Empet) Smith, she graduated from Sidney High School and remained an active member of its alumnae association until her death. She is survived by her children: Dan (Elizabeth) Rowe, Betsy (Jack) Rowe-Manning, Kathleen (Dennis) Rood; nine grandchildren: Michael (Leisa) Rowe, Meghan Rowe (James) Phillips, James (Katherine) Rood, Kathryn Rood (Daniel) Kinnetz, Michael, Amy, Carrie, Allison and Daniel Rood, five great grandchildren: Charlie and Grant Rowe, Claire Phillips, Tye Kinnetz and Patrick Rood; sister Norma Hammerberg, brother, Dr. Willard Smith, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Betty was predeceased by her husband of 69 years, Charles Rowe, her granddaughter, Jennifer Rood, her parents and brother, Robert Smith. Betty was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother and a loyal friend. She delighted in time with family and friends and took great pride in her grandchildren. She had a quick wit and an undaunted competitive spirit which she demonstrated in games of Scrabble with friends and on line with grandchildren. She enjoyed long hikes, reading, televised sports, crossword puzzles, Killian Red, knitting, summers at her cottage on Chenango Lake in Norwich, NY and winters in Cocoa Beach, FL. Betty was a parishioner of Blessed Sacrament Church, Syracuse and a member of its Altar Rosary Society. A funeral mass will be celebrated at Blessed Sacrament Church on Saturday, June 29 at 2:00 pm. Burial will take place at a later date at St. Paul's Cemetery, Norwich, NY. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Iroquois Nursing Home (3rd floor) 4600 Southwood Heights Drive Jamesville, NY 13078.
