Obituary of Joseph Warren Young III
Joseph Warren Young III, 88, of Syracuse, NY, passed away surrounded by family on December 20th, 2024. Born in Jersey City to Joseph Warren Young Jr and Marguerite Bennett on September 20, 1936, Joe, also affectionately called Warren, was raised in Nutley, NJ where he cultivated the values and sense of community that guided his life. A proud graduate of The Peddie School (‘54) and Williams College (‘58), Joe built a successful career in financial services, blending intellect, connection and community with a strong commitment to integrity and service.
After settling in Syracuse in the mid 60s, Joe became deeply involved in his community, leaving a legacy of generosity, leadership, and friendship. He was involved in a wide variety of organizations including the Rotary Club, The Century Club, The International Center, Onondaga Historical Association, SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF), and St. David’s Episcopal Church. His youthful energy fueled a career marked by commitment and care, a lifetime of global adventures, and friendships forged across generations and countries
Known as a confidant to family, friends, and clients alike, Joe had a unique gift for listening and offering sound advice. A man of refined taste: he delighted in dining out, he was a coffee connoisseur, and always presented himself with a dapper and stylish flair, with colorful socks and snazzy ties.
Joe was also an avid traveler and adventurer accompanied by Betsy, his wife of 58 years. The couple eagerly immersed themselves in the world’s cultures and landscapes. Together they made lifelong friendships wherever they went.
Predeceased by his dear sister, Sally Ann Howard, Joe was a steadfast husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He is survived by Betsy (née Newman) Young, Sarah (Joel) Jackson, Rebecca Young (Liz Paulson) along with 11 grandchildren, Alexander, Benjamin, Christopher (Annette), Daniel, Ezekiel, Frederick, Grace, Jesse, Henry, Isaac, and Jane, and nephews and nieces whom he adored and countless others whose lives he touched with kindness, wit, and appreciation.
A celebration of life will be held in the early spring, details to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Onondaga Historical Association, honoring his commitment to service and community. To donate: cnyhistory.org
Joe lived a life marked by curiosity, love and adventure. He will be deeply missed.
