Obituary of Shirley A. Wombles
Shirley Ann Wombles (Miss Shirley), 86, of Lyncourt, passed away on June 10, 2024 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s at Loretto Nursing Home.
Shirley was a lifelong resident of Syracuse, NY, born an only child on 8/16/1937. After Shirley graduated from Eastwood High School in 1954, she attended CCBI for accounting. She worked as the County accountant for the comptroller’s office for a few years and then from ages 23 to 60, Shirley was employed by MONEY. She held the titles of Commissions to SCIIU and Accountant as well as the President of MONEY Employee Associates. After retirement at age 60, Shirley worked in investments with Russ.
Shirley poured herself into her passions: dancing and crafts. Shirley danced from age 3 to 17 with Anita Johns in downtown Syracuse. At age 18, she became Miss Shirley and taught dance at the Cortland YMCA for over 30 years. Miss Shirley choreographed the recitals and designed and created all the costumes with her mother, Barbara.
Miss Shirley hung up her dancing shoes in the 1980’s and focused on creating and selling costumes and other crafts with her biggest event being the LaFayette Apple Fest. Shirley’s crafting days ended in 2018 due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease.
When Shirley was not working or sewing she enjoyed golfing, painting, gardening, traveling, going to ballets or musicals and being with friends. She assisted in coordinating fundraisers for the local Muscular Dystrophy Association. Shirley also loved all animals. Her children were her many cats that she cared for over the years.
Shirley is predeceased by her parents Delbert and Barbara Wombles. Although Shirley did not have siblings, a spouse or children, she found family in her neighbors, her friends, her students and most of all those who called her Aunt Shirley. Shirley is survived by her godson and family, Jeffrey and Mari-Kristine Neyhart, their four children, their grandchildren and Jeffrey’s mother, Sharon Neyhart.
Private burial was held in Woodlawn Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Loretto Nursing Home to help those who care for loved ones afflicted with terminal diseases.
