Obituary of John C. Sweeney

John C. Sweeney, 88, died on February 18 at Loretto. He was a resident of Loretto Cunningham for 17 years.   He was born in Syracuse, the oldest of 7 children to John B and Zetta Frey-Sweeney.
He was a graduate of Assumption Academy and LeMoyne College.  In 1958 he enlisted in the Air Force and proudly served for 6 years. His career was spent primarily as an auditor with the Defense Audit Department of the US government
He was a devoted Catholic that unselfishly gave his time to help those in need.  He believed strongly in giving back to his church and his community. He was pre-deceased by his wife Ruth; parents John B. and Zetta Sweeney; brothers: Richard, Gerald, Paul (Joe) and his sister Judith Stuhler.  He is survived by his step daughter Susan Mika and granddaughters Patti and Jessica; brothers Dennis and Leo.  True to his nature, John assumed a parental role in the raising of his nephew Michael Stuhler; nieces Stephanie Bratt and Jennifer Raphael after the untimely death of their parents. He was a constant supportive presence in their lives. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews that will always cherish his memory.  
A visitation hour will be held at Assumption Church, 812 N. Salina St. at 9am on Friday, February 24th.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am with entombment to follow in Assumption Cemetery.
