Walter T. Mathews, III, 71, of Syracuse, died on Monday at University Hospital after a long battle with cancer.  He was a life long resident of Syracuse and enjoyed spending summers at the family camp in Chaumont, NY.  He retired from New Process Gear in 2004 after 36 years of service.  He was a veteran of the US Army and a life time member of Pastimes.
He was pre-deceased by his parents Walter and Betty Jane and his brother Gary.
He is survived by his nephew Gary F.(Kelly) Mathews Jr. of Laconia, NH; a sister in law: Cathy (David) Schibilia; great nieces and nephews: Jacob & Jordan Mathews, Christian & Angelica Platon; and numerous cousins.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday at 10:30AM in the Frasier-Shepardson Funeral Home with burial to follow in Assumption Cemetery.  Calling hours will be held on Friday, 5-7pm at the funeral home, 1217 N. Salina Street.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
