Obituary of William J. Mattes

William John Mattes, 85 of Mattydale, died at home on Sunday.  He was a graduate of North High School class of 1951.  He was a veteran of the Army during the Korean Conflict.  During his service career he graduated from 5th Infantry Division Leaders Course and also the 3rd Infantry Non-Commissioned Officers Academy in Tactics,  Leadership and Administration.  He received the Combat Infantry Medal and the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Stars for Battle Action.  He retired in 1994 as a Lt. after 34 years with the Syracuse Fire Department.  He was awarded the Officers Club Valor Award in 1971.  He was a communicant of Assumption Church, a member of Local #280 and the Syracuse Fire Department Officers Club.
He is the widower of Jennie Mattes who died in 1990.  
He is survived by a son: William A. Mattes of Rome; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Friends may greet the family from 9-10am on Wednesday at the Frasier-Shepardson Funeral Home with a Mass at 10:30 in Assumption Church.  Burial will be in Assumption Cemetery.
