August “Gus” “Butch” Ewald, of Syracuse, died peacefully at his home on Tuesday, December 22, 2015. He was born on January 16, 1938 in Syracuse and is pre-deceased by his parents August and Elizabeth Hare Ewald, and his sisters: Elizabeth Lightner and Ann Cornell. He served in the US Army with the Military Police in Germany. “Gus” retired from Onondaga County as a crew leader in 1999. He had formerly worked at Western Union. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, sports and using his computer. He is survived by his wife of 52 years Carol “Niedzialek” Ewald; children: Karen (Mark) Spera of Brewerton; August Jr. of Cicero; Kelly Ewald (Mark Burlingame) of Brewerton; grandchildren: Mark, Nicholas, Meleana and Ian; brothers-in-law: John Lightner of Virginia, David Niedzialek of Panama; and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 2-5pm at the Goddard-Crandall-Shepardson Funeral Home with a service at 5pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of CNY.
