John Seel Obituary
John Seel, 89, of East Syracuse, passed away on April 14, 2026 at Iroquois Nursing Home. Born on July 10, 1936 in Enchenreuth, Germany to Friedrich and Maria (Goller) Seel, John’s life was a remarkable journey of dedication, adventure, and warmth.
John began his story in Germany, then moved to New York City in 1955, eager to embrace new opportunities. There, in 1958, his path crossed with Renate Meffle, and their bond led to marriage in 1961 and a move to Syracuse to build a family together. For nearly four decades, John shared his talents with Borden Foods as a food scientist, leaving a lasting impact in his field.
He was deeply involved in business and his community, serving as former chairman of the Institute of Food Technologists, president of the local German American Society, and lifetime member and president of the Bavarian Club Almenrausch. His passion for heritage was further evident through his active participation in folk dancing. In 2003, John joined Tigris Shriners, and his commitment culminated in his role as Potentate in 2013.
Family always came first for John. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Renate; grandson Jonathan; and four of his five brothers. He is survived by his sons Kenneth (and fiancé Mary) and Mark (Edith); grandchildren Eric, Abigail, Katherine, Jessica, and Mason Seel; as well as ten nieces and nephews.
The family will hold a private memorial service for the co-internment of John and Renate. If you wish to honor John’s legacy and his devotion to children’s health, please consider a donation to Shriner’s Hospital for Children in his memory at donate.shrinerschildrens.org.
