Thomas B. Hayes, of Syracuse, died on Tuesday. He worked for the Bell System for 30 years retiring from NYNEX and had also been an instructor at BOCES. While at NYNEX he was active in the Pioneers and played in the Industrial Sport Leagues. He was also an advisor and fund raiser for Junior Achievement. Tom was a race car enthusiast and served as a Crew Chief, helped to build cars and, was a member of U.S.A.C. He was an amateur radio operator and was a founding member of the local chapter. Tom made his own Transmitters and Receivers. Tom was a member of the Knights of Columbus, ST. Joseph’s Council. He served in the US Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the Eastwood American Legion Post, and served as commander, trustee, club manager and executive committee. He was pre-deceased by his parents Bernard and Eleanor McDonald Hayes. He is survived by his wife Patricia L. (Spadafore); children: Mary Jo (Paul) Lautier, Thomas B. II (Mary), Bernard T. (Annette), Michael (Frances), Laurie Brush, Stephen C. (Michele); brother Robert Hayes; 15 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. The funeral mass will be held in Blessed Sacrament Church on Friday, October 16 at 10:30 with burial in ST. Mary’s Cemetery. Calling hours will be held for one hour before the mass in the church.
