Joseph Russo, 92, of East Syracuse, died peacefully on Thursday at the NYS Veteran’s Home in Oxford, NY. Mr. Russo served in the US Navy during WW2. He formerly worked at Canada Dry on Erie Boulevard and retired from Netti Wholesale Beverage after many years. During his retirement, he worked as a starter at Hickory Hills Golf Course and enjoyed his winters in Florida. He was a member of the I.A.A.C. and the James Street Bowling League. He enjoyed playing cards and going to the casino.
Mr. Russo was a prominent golfer in the 1970's-80's and made 7 Holes in One. In 1970 and 73 he won the Syracuse District 2 Ball Championship. He also won the Syracuse District Father & Son Championship 10 times between 1965-1996 as well as the Post Standard Senior Amateur Championship in 1982. Mr. Russo was the 1988 Syracuse District Champion and was a member from 1965-1978 of the Tecumseh Club that won the Syracuse District Inter-Club Championship.
He was pre-deceased by his wife Nancy; parents Paul and Filomenia Russo; sister Victoria Dalesandro; and 3 brothers: Anthony, Vincent and Victor.
He is survived by a son Joseph P. (Cindy) Russo; a daughter Annemarie (Thomas) Morabito; brothers: Christopher (Arlene) and Paul (Kathleen) Russo; sister Elizabeth Mallaro; sisters-in-law: Jane & Darlene Russo, Gilda MacDonald, Yolanda Skinner; grandchildren: Joseph J. Russo, Erica L. Petersen, Marisa and Gina Morabito, Maria Thurston; great-grandchildren: Sophia & Giana Russo, Aviana & Camile Thurston; a long time companion Connie Hall and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Russo’s family would like express their gratitude for the care and compassion at the the NYS Veteran’s Home and especially Susan Avery, Daneille Tosko and the staff at the Apple Cottage.
