Beatrice "Betty" Smith, 95, formerly of Grasshopper Hill, died on Monday, April 24, 2017 at Francis House. Parents, Thomas and Beatrice O’Grady Harrington, were proud Irish immigrants who loved raising their family in upstate NY. Betty worked for the US government in Washington, D.C. during WWII before returning to Syracuse to marry and raise her family. Betty retired from the Onondaga County Dept. of Social Services after 30 years of service. Earlier in her life, Betty was a crossing guard for the Syracuse School District. She was an active member of St. Vincent de Paul and St. Daniels Parish, a lifelong member of the Humane Society and a founding member of the Sherwood Avenue Gang (SAG.) Betty was a great mom, meticulous housekeeper and devoted dog lover. She was pre-deceased by her husband Harvey in 1961, her brothers Thomas and John, sister Agnes Harrington and grandson Brian Smith.
Her family includes her sons: J. Casey (Eileen) Smith of Marcellus, Thomas “Tippy” (Nancy) Smith of Syracuse; daughters Carolyn (Paul Handel) Smith and Beatrice “Betsy” (Michael Carapella) Smith both of Hammondsport, NY; 5 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, devoted cousins and friends.
The Smith family would like to thank the staff at the Hearth on James and Francis House for their care and compassion.
A memorial mass will be held Saturday at 9:30am in St. Daniel’s Church. Friends may greet the family in church from 8:45-9:30 prior to the mass. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Francis House.
